The history making Gymnastics Ireland delegation
In May of this year, The Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) announced jointly with Gymnastics Ireland, that Ellis O'Reilly and Kieran Behan have been formally selected to represent Team Ireland at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. This follows the success of the gymnasts at the Rio Test Event in April, where both gymnasts qualified themselves for the summer Games.
Ellis becomes the first Irish female gymnast to qualify and be selected for an Olympic Games. For Kieran Behan, this is his second Olympics, having previously qualified and competed in London in 2012.
Four years ago, Sally Filmer, our Performance & Technical Manager set an ambitious target to qualify 1 male & 1 female gymnast to Rio and today it is a target achieved.
Mairead Kavanagh & Denis Donoghue have also been invited by the international gymnastics federation (FIG) to judge at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio this summer.
Congratulations to both our gymnasts, Kieran and Ellis and our judges, Denis and Mairead and we wish them the very best ahead of the start of the Games in August.
The gymnastics events take place from August 6th through August 11th. Kieran will compete on August 6th whilst Ellis will compete on August 7th.
The Olympic draws in Gymnastics, which determine the order in which athletes or nations will compete in the qualification round at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, have been published.
Kieran Behan has been drawn in Sub Division 3 on the Pommel, whilst Ellis O'Reilly has been drawn in Sub Division 1 on the Floor.
A total of 98 gymnasts -- 12 teams of five gymnasts and 38 individuals -- will compete in the qualification round in both Men's and Women's Artistic Gymnastics in Rio.
