National Squad, Events & Education Up & Running in NIA

22nd March 2017, 00:00a.m. | National Series

800 competitors, 2000 spectators & 100 Squad Gymnasts were involved in Gymnastics Ireland’s first official outing in the new National Indoor Arena (NIA) on the weekend of 3rd & 4th March 2017.

The first competitive events of the year took place in the National Indoor Training Centre section of the NIA including the Women’s Level 1, Trampoline National Qualifier & Tumbling National Qualifier – all part of the Gymnastics Ireland National Series. Approx. 2000 spectators watched as the gymnasts stepped onto the field of play in the world class facility for the first time within the new home for the sport of gymnastics in Ireland.

At the same time as the competition was taking place in one end of the NIA, approx. 100 gymnasts were involved in a multi discipline National squad training session covering Women’s, Men’s, Rhythmic, Acrobatics & Tumbling disciplines at the other end of the NIA in the National Gymnastics Training Centre (NGTC). This was the second official outing in the NGTC for Gymnastics Ireland following a national squad testing weekend in early February.

Speaking at the weekend, CEO Ciaran Gallagher commented…

‘This was a great first outing for two of our key programmes in the NIA. The very fact that the facility is large and versatile enough for us to be able to host a large competition at the same time as a national squad session under one roof demonstrates just how important this facility is to our sport. It will enable us to make the most of our resources and provide top quality experiences for our members. Having already had our education programme host the first of our Coaching Courses in the NGTC, with these three programmes now fully operational in the NIA we have a busy and exciting year ahead of us…’
