UPDATED 9th Oct 2018, 10:37pm:
Emma Slevin qualified for the Final on bars today at the Youth Olympic Games, placing 7th. This is her second apparatus to qualify on this week.
Speaking of the results CEO of Gymnastics Ireland, Mr. Ciaran Gallagher said: ‘We are only half way through the Youth Olympic Games qualification competition but already it’s turning out to be quite the week in Buenos Aries for Emma Slevin! Uneven Bars has historically been the weakest piece of apparatus for Irish women’s artistic gymnasts competing on the international circuit. In qualifying for Bars final today Emma has not only proven herself a quality gymnast on this apparatus, she has demonstrated that the hard work within our National Squad programme to elevate the standard of our gymnasts on Bars is paying off. Another historic first for women’s gymnastics in Ireland and further reward for Emma, her personal coaches Sally Batley & Giacomo Camiciotti and our Performance & Technical Manager Sally Johnson. We now look forward to the Beam qualification comp and of course Finals...’
Slevin’s qualifying round continues tomorrow with balance beam at 6pm Irish time.
9th Oct 2018: Women’s Artistic gymnast Emma Slevin qualified for the final on vault yesterday at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. Slevin scored a personal best of 13.2 after two rounds with a new vault with increased difficulty, hitting 8th place overall.
Following the competition, Emma commented; ‘I feel amazing, that’s the best score that I ever got in vault and I did a new vault as well! So I’m just happy it all went okay. It’s the full twist full twisting Yurkenko. It’s an upgrade from my last one which was a straight with no twist. It took a lot of practise, I’ve been doing this since the start of May, and it’s only ready now. This boosts my confidence going into competition over the next few days.’
Commenting on the achievements CEO of Gymnastics Ireland, Mr. Ciaran Gallagher said: ‘Huge congratulations to Emma Slevin on another first for Gymnastics Ireland and Ireland as a sporting nation in qualifying for our first apparatus final at the World Youth Olympic Games. After impressing at the recent junior European championships Emma is part of the new wave of young talented Irish female gymnasts and historic results like this pave the way for others coming through to international level. My congratulations to personal coaches Sally & Giacomo in addition to our Performance & Technical Manager Sally Johnson and the very best of luck to Emma for the Final!’
