Rhys McClenaghan - Ireland’s first Olympic gymnastics finalist!

24.07.21, Ariake Gymnastics Centre Tokyo: With the conclusion of subdivision 3 of men’s qualifications in Tokyo it has been officially confirmed that Rhys McClenaghan has become Ireland’s first Olympic gymnastics finalist! Earlier this morning he posted a stellar score of 15.266 however official confirmation could not be given until competition had concluded.

"I am so proud to be the first Irish gymnast to make an Olympic final" McClenaghan stated after the news was officially confirmed. “I am looking forward to going out and representing Team Ireland once again.”

Commenting on the achievement, Gymnastics Ireland CEO said: “Proud is an understatement! Everyone at Gymnastics Ireland is buzzing following Rhys’ superb performance! The pressure was immense however the huge preparation put in to get to this point was evident as he did exactly what he needed to do. Superb work by our National Coach Luke Carson, Performance & Technical Manager Sally Johnson and physio Julianne Ryan in supporting Rhys to this point! Roll on finals…’

The pommel-horse final will take place on Sunday 1st August starting at 10.30am Irish time, live on RTÉ 2 and RTÉ Player.

Attention now shifts to the women’s artistic qualifiers which will take place tomorrow Sunday 25th July starting at 2am Irish time. Look out for Meg Ryan competing in subdivision 2 at 3.45am.
