Sunday 30th April, Cairo, Egypt; Irish gymnast Dominick Cunningham finished competition today ranking 4th on vault with a score of 14.150 at the 2023 Artistic Apparatus World Cup final in Cairo.
Talking about his experience Dominick Cunningham said:
“I had a last minute trip to Cairo as my European Championships was a disaster, I was in a very bad way. Gymnastics Ireland supported me and they said, right let’s go to Cairo and try to get into the World Championships for floor and vault, so we came out here with good positivity, had a good rest and we cracked on, had a very good floor routine with Eamon and then I qualified for the vault final and went out an did my job and I have a basic second vault because the code of points changed and then I went out today with Eamon, stuck together as a team and we really enjoyed it. I landed both my vaults on my feet with a fairly good score for the vaults that I had and I really enjoyed the competition and the atmosphere here and I feel like I’m back on track so we have a big future ahead and I’m going to enjoy every single moment. So let’s go we can’t rest, we got to go and get back fighting!...”
Gymnastics Ireland coach Conor McGovern added:
“Very proud of Dominick today making his very first Irish vault final. He was very unlucky just to miss out on that podium but a fourth place for him at this stage is very good, I’m totally happy that this has hopefully helped him set up his World’s qualification route very well”
Gymnastics Ireland Performance and Technical Manager, Sally Johnson said:
“Well done to Dominick today with a fourth place finish on vault! This concludes the World Cup series and we look forward to the official list and announcement of all the gymnasts who have qualified to the World Championships this year in Antwerp, where Ireland hopes to secure places in the Olympic Games in Paris”
Gymnastics Ireland CEO Ciaran Gallagher added:
“Great day out in Cairo today for Dom! Superb to see him yet again in finals on the circuit and strongly in contention for podium finishes. His performance today in addition to the other World Cups has marked a clear statement of intent for all his hard work to date and is clear for all to see!''
