McClenaghan nominated for ‘Sportsperson of the Year’ at the 2019 RTE Sport Awards

The 10-person shortlist for the RTÉ Sport Awards 2019 Sportsperson of the Year was revealed on Sunday 8th December with 2019 World medallist Rhys McClenaghan named amongst 10 sports personalities. McClenaghan became the first Irish gymnast to qualify and then medal at the World Championships in October, creating history again for the sport of gymnastics in Ireland by claiming bronze in the pommel horse event in Stuttgart and securing his ticket to the 2020 Olympic Games.
Commenting on the news, CEO of Gymnastics Ireland, Ciaran Gallagher said: “Rhys’ medal in Stuttgart established him as a global gymnastics star as well as cementing his position as a top Irish sports star and Tokyo 2020 medal potential. This recognition from RTE after his win last year for 2018 RTE Young Sportsperson of the Year is earned reward for a stellar year. Congratulations to Rhys, our National Coach Luke Carson & Performance Manager Sally Johnson. The winner will be announced live on RTÉ One this Saturday, December 14 at 9.20pm.
