4th March 2021, 22:59p.m. | National

Gymnastics Ireland wrapped up Thursday evening with the first of its Club Support Webinar Series “Club Governance with Sarah O’Shea” supported by our insurers, Marsh.

The online event succeeded at delivering insightful information to our member clubs around the country, about what good governance looks like within a gymnastics club environment. The areas of focus included the importance of good governance, reviewing club structures, and the composition of committees/sub-committees.

"Having good governance in our clubs builds trust and confidence and shows that we value what our club has to offer. A strong vibrant club with good governance practices attracts more membership, more opportunities for funding, more diversity and strengthens what our club can offer to the wider community - governance is there to help us run our club more effectively for everyone" said speaker Sarah O’Shea.

Gymnastics Ireland CEO Ciaran Gallagher was on hand inaugurating the start of this Club Support Webinar Series hoping that clubs can soon see a return to action: “It was great to have Sarah O’Shea deliver such an important overview of good governance principals, practices and structures for our first club support webinar. We look forward to continuing to support our clubs as they continue to work to improve their own governance structures and practices. We look forward to the rollout of the rest of the webinars over the next number of weeks and again thank our sponsors Marsh for the support.” he said.

Sarah O’ Shea is a qualified solicitor and holds an International Masters in Sports Law and Management. She has spent the last 15 years working in sport and currently offers consultancy services for National Governing Bodies across a range of areas including governance, strategy, restructures, writing governance guides and good governance training for staff, volunteers and board members.

On a voluntary basis Sarah also previously chaired the Federation of Irish Sport and is currently the elected Honorary Secretary of the Olympic Federation of Ireland and Chairs its Governance Committee. She is also a member of the European Olympic Committee Legal Commission, a member of the Women in Sport International legal Committee and a case panel member of the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
