8th March 2022; Gymnastics Ireland closed out the first weekend of GymSTART events for 2022 at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena with a huge turnover of 1200+ gymnasts taking part, of which 80% were females, with some 3000 spectators supporting.
Check out our highlights of the weekend captured by Hello Deer Media.
The weekend also saw an increase in the number of teenage girls taking part compared to previous years. This is a huge step forward towards this year’s initiative in partnership with the Sport Ireland Women in Sport programme, targeted at retaining current and recruiting new female teenagers in gymnastics.
Speaking about the weekend, Participation Manager Aimi Baker said:
“It was fantastic to be back at the National Indoor Arena running our GymSTART Competition after a break last year due to the Covid Restrictions. This year, as well as focusing on delivering an fun-filled national event for all our clubs and recreational members, we also wanted to pay particular attention to encouraging the participation of our teenage gymnasts, and gymnasts involved in our GymABLE Disability Program, with the aim of fulfilling our objective of making GymSTART truly inclusive to all”.
On the theme of women in sport, today on International Women’s Day, Gymnastics Ireland would like to wish all our female gymnasts, coaches, audience, staff members and all women within our gymnastics community a very happy day!
Attention now shifts to the upcoming National Series event on 26th & 27th March where 5 gymnastics disciplines will compete in the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena, Dublin. Tickets for the upcoming March event will be available in the coming weeks on our website.
