GymSTART Competition sees an increase in female teenage participation

4th December 2022; Gymnastics Ireland closed out the year with the final weekend of GymSTART events for 2022 at the University of Limerick Sports Arena. The GymSTART Competition saw 800 gymnasts compete on floor and vault from 11 clubs representing 6 counties and over 1800 spectators supporting.

The weekend also saw an increase in the number of teenage girls competing compared to previous years. Approximately 20% of the female participants in this event were teenagers, a huge step forward towards the continues development of our 2022 initiative in partnership with Sport Ireland - 'Keeping Teenage Girls in Gymnastics'.

Speaking about the weekend, Participation Manager Aimi Baker said: “What a weekend! Over 800 gymnasts from 11 clubs. This is the first time we have run the GymSTART competition in Limerick and if numbers and smiles are anything to go by, it was a huge success!”

Last Sunday, the GymSTART Challenge event took place in Dublin at the Sport Ireland Campus National Indoor Arena with over 700 gymnasts participating and over 1700 spectators cheering on the day.

GymSTART is a programme designed by Gymnastics Ireland to drive participation in the club, school or educational setting by creating a safe, progressive & fun environment for all, from coaches & teachers through to gymnasts & students. Attention now shifts to our annual awards night on Saturday 10th December in the Radisson Blu Hotel on Golden Lane in Dublin 8. The 2022 Marsh Gymnastics Ireland National Awards will reward all those stand out performers & contributors to the sport of Gymnastics throughout the year.
