Speaking of the launch, Gymnastics Ireland’s Director of Participation, Inclusion and Club Development (DPICD) said:
"Every year at this time, we host our GymABLE Disability Gymnastics Celebration week, which ties in with the International Day of Persons with a Disability (3rd December). We take this opportunity to convey the work we have done throughout the year and promote what we have to offer to our clubs, but more importantly to celebrate our clubs and our gymnasts involved in our GymABLE programme. We want to shine a light on all the amazing programmes running all around the country providing gymnastics opportunities to children with disabilities. This week is also part of our communications strategy where we are working to improve the visibility of disability gymnastics not only within our club network, and their coaches and their families, but also the wider communities. We are already looking forward to 2025, and the opportunity to expand and further develop our GymABLE disability gymnastics programme".
Below is a rundown of what’s available to help clubs ensure that all gymnasts, regardless of ability, can thrive in a welcoming environment.
Comprehensive Online Resources
Gymnastics Ireland’s revamped website provides easy access to a range of resources tailored for GymABLE programs. From step-by-step guides to instructional videos, these resources offer practical insights for setting up an inclusive gymnastics program within any club. The "how-to" videos break down the basics, showing how clubs can implement GymABLE in manageable, effective steps.
Training and Development Opportunities
Recognizing the importance of education, Gymnastics Ireland has expanded coach training options, equipping coaches with the skills needed to confidently lead GymABLE sessions abd develop programmes. Coaches can access workshops & modules, educational materials, and online courses specifically designed to enhance their understanding of disability gymnastics. For clubs wanting to formally align with inclusive practices, Gymnastics Ireland offers a Club Accreditation Programme, marking a club's dedication to accessible and supportive gymnastics for all.
Club Support and Networking
Building a strong network is key to success in disability gymnastics, and Gymnastics Ireland offers clubs multiple ways to connect and share knowledge. Online “coffee mornings” provide a casual, supportive space for clubs to exchange ideas and advice with others who are navigating similar challenges and triumphs. GI’s team is also available for regular club check-ins to answer questions, offer assistance, or guide clubs on how to grow their programs.
Recognition and Motivation
To celebrate outstanding commitment and achievements, Gymnastics Ireland promotes inclusion through awards such as GymABLE Club of the Year, GymABLE Coach of the Year, and GymABLE Gymnast of the Year. These awards spotlight the hard work of clubs, coaches, and athletes, inspiring others to invest in and expand their GymABLE offerings. Gymnastics Ireland also recently introduced GymABLE Gymnast Activity Awards, designed to motivate gymnasts and track their progress, creating an environment where every success counts.
Building an Inclusive Community
In line with Gymnastics Ireland’s "A Place for All" charter, clubs are encouraged to sign Active Disability Ireland’s Sport Inclusion Disability Charter, pledging their commitment to equity, diversity, and belonging. This commitment extends beyond just athletes, ensuring that everyone in the gymnastics community feels valued. The charter integrates with Gymnastics Ireland’s disability, equity, inclusion, and belonging strategy (DEIB), reinforcing the importance of accessible and supportive spaces.
New Pathways and Social Media Support
Through social media, Gymnastics Ireland actively reshapes the narrative around disability gymnastics by resharing posts from clubs and highlighting success stories. These efforts not only promote the GymABLE program but also inspire and inform other clubs on how to build their own inclusive pathways for GymABLE gymnasts.
Gymnastics Ireland is dedicated to creating a truly inclusive sport that welcomes everyone. By offering these comprehensive resources, Gymnastics Ireland is helping clubs break down barriers, providing a place for every gymnast to achieve their potential. The benefits of participating in such a program extend far beyond gymnastics, building confidence, resilience, and a sense of community for gymnasts across Ireland.
